Regular Season Coming to a Close
« on: April 27, 2009, 02:41:52 am »
We're just about to start Week 5, and after that will be the final week of League :O :O :O. Thanks everyone for sticking it out. It's been pretty fun!

I'm gonna give you all a basic idea of how the finals are going to work. The top 16 players/teams will make it into the finals TOURNAMENT, and will be seeded according to their rankings. Each round will probably last 4-5 days (I may make this longer if people need them to be longer because of inability to compete in the time frame), and it will consist of two players/teams going to head, according to seed (1 vs 16, 2 vs 15 etc etc, works exactly like a March Madness bracket). They will be competing in one level (This format is still subject to change). How the level will be determined is yet to be determined. I am still trying to figure out a way to make it as fair as possible.

I'm also starting to think about the summer league, so any suggestions for changes or tweaks in format for the next league would be appreciated. I know Rolken has suggested that there should be less levels, so there will be more competition (especially on the 3D side), my concern being that it will leave people with the inability to compete at times. I also need a compendium list of levels that need to be avoided. I cannot keep track of all the PMs that I have discussing these things with people. I know where RR's is for SSR, but any other game, I would love a list of levels to stay away from for the Summer league. As a note: a glitch-based time is not a reason to stay away from a particular level. If the glitch is luck-based to the point where no one has any idea how to get it, then yes, it could be considered. Basically, give a justification for the level to not be included as well. (-hunting- is a sufficient reason for hunting levels >_>).

Thanks everyone for your participation. :D It's been fun~

Will there be some way to make sure this level is playable by all parties involved? I'd hate to be paired against someone and be given, say, Radical Train - Shadow </random> and automatically lose due to my inability to play the level since I don't own the game.
<Tails> also "GET BLUE SPHERES" on a black-and-white TV remains the best special stage of all time

Surely people would be contacted to see if they are available to games given.

I think on a variation to what Rolk has said, I would like to see more levels be competed in by each person. I've gone through 4 weeks of this and will be able to go through a 5th by only playing to my strenghts, I'd like to be forced to play my weaknesses too. I guess alot of people wouldn't agree with that, but whatever <_<

And yeah, i will be going solo in the summer league before someone tells me i should(ve) done that <_<

Quiet werster-DarkspinesSonic!  Anyway, this could be quite fun.  In terms of time constraints, my summer break begins on May 8th.  Therefore, there shouldn't be any problems on my end for the finals.

Regarding finals, I think that before the tournament starts, players should be asked which games they can submit for, or, the games for each matchup should be chosen from the levels that player/team has already submitted for.

My question is, how do teams work in these head to heads? If only one member of a team has a given game and that's the game for the week, then one member would end up sitting out...

As far as deciding on which levels aren't acceptable and which are, maybe we should all work together to try and vet games and levels. Maybe do committees for each game. I'd be willing to head up a Shadow committee. I kind of fell asleep on the job this time around, otherwise I would have asked flyby to exclude lost impact due to the basically random artificial chaos splatter configurations. Any thoughts? Any interest?

I am pro committees. Also yeah, for the finals, I will be making sure to choose a level that both parties have access to.

I am pro committees telling me what levels should be excluded. We still have a month to 6 weeks til the summer league starts, so start committeeing and get back to me! :D

Also I am considering doing 2 levels (1 2D 1 3D level) for each round of the finals. My concern that it woudl be too much to in such a short amount of time. I suppose I am looking more at single players, as teams would just take one each. So, thoughts?

There has also been a mini-stir about including top 16 out of 19 players. I am wondering how much of a concern this is to the league people as whole, and how much it is just a minor issue concerning a few people. So, thought about that as well.

Honestly, the question is how low could you cut the bracket and have it still be exciting. I mean with 16 players, the tournament will have four rounds, right? The top 16, the top 8, the top four (semifinal) , and the top two (final); add an extra round if you're doing double elmination, which I strongly recommend. If you chop that in half, you have only three-four rounds instead of four-five. It's a question of how much suspense you want. It seems kind of strange to me that there are so few people being left out, since they must feel terribly alone, but I am not complaining about the familiar 16 competitor tournament bracket and wonder how it could work otherwise.

One interesting thing you could look into is three person head to heaed instead of two for the first round. Say you take the top twelve teams and put them in groups of three. For each triad, the best time goes into the main bracket, the second into a lower bracket, the third is eliminated. Then you have 8 teams left and 3-4 more rounds (8 players, 4 players, 2 players, then possibly the two brackets face off). That way more teams are excluded, but you tsill get a fairly lengthy tournament bracket.

As for multiperson rounds, if you only have one level per round, then you should have a rule mandating that team members have to alternate or something. If you say that each team member must do 50% of the semifinal, then you will probably have an influx of the strongest member of the team going the first two rounds so as to guarantee a higher final placement. If you require them to alternate, with 2D/3D alternated accordingly, that'll be more indicative of their actual position.
